WHAT WE’RE PLAYING

Join the Rebellion

Sneak, steal, and scurry through this fresh take on Assassin’s Creed.

Look past the cartoonish graphics and the first moments of Assassin’s Creed Rebellion will be immediately familiar if you’re a fan of the popular series. When franchise favorite Ezio dives from a great height (in slow motion) into a conveniently placed cart of hay, you may think youre playing a mobile version of a console game.

But Rebellion is very much its own experience. Delivered in accessible, bite-size pieces, it confidently distills the series’ stealth, combat, and adventuring into a game that works beautifully on iPhone and iPad.

Thwack! Missions are a mix of combat, stealth, and light puzzle-solving.

Starting out, you’re dropped into the assassin’s Spanish base and tasked with building it into a formidable HQ. This will entail undertaking side-scrolling heist missions to earn loot and new recruits before heading back to accessorize.

While Assassin’s Creed stalwart Ezio is the star, a mix of supporting characters drawn from the series’ many different universes—even that of the 2016 movie—pays homage to the franchise as a whole. It’s wise to pick three characters with a useful range of abilities: Use your assassin to take out guards, then send your lock picker into a room you know is full of booby traps. Asking a bulky hand-to-hand-combat expert to walk along a plank connecting two rooms isn’t smart; you’re better off sending a fleet-footed thief instead.

Choose character types that fit the task at hand.

It’s best to take each mission room by room by assessing the dangers, assigning your best troop to the job, and then reacting quickly when the heist unfolds and things inevitably go wrong. There’s no need to go in blind; before entering a room, tap each of your troops to see how they’d fare against each hazard or enemy, and plan your moves accordingly.

Complete the mission and it’s back to HQ, where you can use your ill-gotten gains to buy new rooms or upgrade existing ones. This loop—run missions, upgrade your base, and head back out for more—is a satisfying take on the Assassin’s Creed formula. Forget the years of painful training—becoming a master assassin is just a few taps away.
