Lingvist: Learn Languages Fast
Ratings & Reviews
I’m really enjoying Lingvist for improving my French vocabulary. One request - in some cards in the General deck you ask questions like “your brother is small” where we need to fill in “your” in French. However you don’t specify which Your you want - formal or informal; therefore students have a 50-50 to answer it correctly. If your cards can specify formal vs informal for sentences like this it would be helpful.Edited in April - my example didn’t make sense
Developer ResponseThank you for the kind words—we’re really glad to hear Lingvist is helping you grow your French vocabulary! You’ve raised an excellent point about the ambiguity between formal and informal forms (e.g., son vs son depending on context, or cases where tu vs vous affects the structure). We understand how this can feel like a guess rather than a learning moment. We’re actively working on improving clarity in our cards, including adding more contextual cues where needed. Feedback like yours is especially helpful in identifying these edge cases, so we truly appreciate you pointing it out.If you come across specific examples, feel free to share them with us via support—we’d be happy to take a closer look. Thanks again for helping us improve!
This app works pretty well, but their speech recognition doesn’t work on certain words, so that’s the only problem. I’ll say the exact word, but it only hears the first part, so you have to type it in. Only certain words though, mostly it works. You won’t really learn how to speak German though.
Developer ResponseThank you for your feedback! We’re glad to hear the app works well for you overall, though we’re sorry that speech recognition hasn’t been working reliably for some words. That definitely shouldn’t happen consistently, and we’re continuing to improve the feature. If you notice specific words where this occurs, please feel free to share them with us at hello@lingvist.io so our team can take a closer look.Lingvist focuses strongly on building vocabulary and comprehension, which are key foundations for speaking. Many learners combine it with additional speaking practice to develop their conversational skills as well.
Lingvist is hands down the best language learning app out there, and, believe me, I have tried them all (including all of the fully paid versions). I took French in school, but never learned to actually speak the language (despite always getting As). Over the years, I have wanted to fix that and finally learn the language for real, once and for all. I am not exaggerating when I say I have tried ALL the language learning apps out there (and not just the free versions, but the fully paid subscriptions). Many were useless, some were very good, but nothing compares to Lingvist. When I started using Lingvist, MAGIC happened. Suddenly, I was able to read novels (actual novels written for adults) in French, including books that I had purchased years ago but given up on as impossibly difficult, and even watch many movies/TV shows in French (something I had all but forsaken). Lingvist made my vocabulary EXPLODE—and somehow, I just remember the words I learn in Lingvist so much better than through other similar apps. As if that weren’t enough, Lingvist has an amazing feature that lets you create custom decks of words to learn. All you have to do is type in a list of words you want to learn, and Lingvist defines them and creates sentences with them. You can even tell Lingvist to expand on your custom list and find other similar words to add. I have no idea why Lingvist is so much more effective than other similar apps, but it just is. It’s like a magic wand for language acquisition. I feel like I have had pixie dust sprinkled on me.
Developer ResponseThank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful review! We’re thrilled to hear how much progress you’ve made with your French and that Lingvist helped you get to the point where you can read novels and enjoy movies and TV in the language. That’s exactly the kind of real-world impact we hope to support. It’s especially great to hear that the vocabulary training and custom decks have been useful for you. Being able to learn words that are personally relevant—and expand on them—is something we designed to help learners move beyond generic lessons and into the language they actually want to use.Thank you for sharing your experience and for learning with Lingvist!
Been super happy with this app. I’m at the stage of my language learning when I can have stilted conversations with locals. This app is perfect for pushing me to the next level. It’s great for practicing different conjugations and usage. It’s not just a vocabulary app. And yet you can use it as a vocabulary builder as well. I also love how you can create your own card sets very easily. So you can truly customize and prioritize your learning.Hoping the next generation of the app includes more information in the tables and notes menu at the bottom of the screen. Would love to see all the conjugations for verb cards. Also, would love descriptions in the notes for similar words. Like in Spanish, the difference between volver and regresar, or despedir, echar, and soltar. I think the note section could give more context for nuances of similar words.
Developer ResponseThank you for the detailed and thoughtful feedback! We’re really happy to hear that Lingvist is helping you move from basic conversations toward the next level and that features like conjugation practice and custom card sets are useful for you.Your suggestions about expanding the tables and notes section—especially adding full verb conjugations and explanations for similar words—are great ideas. Providing more context and nuance is definitely something we’re interested in improving over time. Thanks again for sharing your experience and ideas, and we wish you continued success with your language learning!
Overall I like this app but it has flaws. The app should accept alternative words in the phrases, not insist on me having to learn another word. I already know how to say this. (learning a language is hard enough) Secondly, the voice option capitalizes the first spoken word (when more than one word is needed) and then it doesn’t accept the solution, it wants lower case , then I end up having to type it in by hand. Sort of negates the voice option. Thirdly: Everything is spoken by a robot who really can’t pronounce Italian 100%. It sounds like an alien and according to my Italian teacher the robot actually makes mistakes inflecting some words the wrong way. Recordings of real people would be much better. Also the algorithms throw the words at you that you don’t know, especially within the first 10-20, out of 50. It would be better to intersperse it more; ask for words we already know, so we can first warm up a little and feel better about ourselves. What’s good: learning words in context, in sentences. It doesn’t look like a stupid videogame. I don’t want virtual trophies and be overly praised for no reason. In case any of you Schmucks are actually ever reading this: we should not be rated by including the new word performance! After all, they’re new! Percentages should be based on repeats only. Bye. Off to find something better.

This app is amazing. It’s everything you need to expand your vocabulary in German, Russian, French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Most apps give you just the basics and some structure—even Rosetta Stone—this app teaches you an immense amount of words. Absolutely worth the subscription price for the serious learner.Having all that said, there is one thing this app desperately needs—to understand we’re busy and we can’t always manage daily studying or even weekly studying. It desperately needs “levels” of some sort so we can go back and study all the words we’ve learned before. I remember quite a bit of them, but after two months of not using them or more, it would be great if I could go back and review those words at-will. Having all that said, I’ve completed the Rosetta Stone and Duolingo courses and they were okay for the basics, perhaps a few days travel in a country that speaks your targeted language, but this was the vocabulary breakthrough I needed to make German radio stations much more intelligible. It’ll help you get to the point where you can reasonably understand most of the conversations others speak. Great job, Lingvist team, now please consider those additions to the app.
Developer ResponseWe appreciate your detailed analysis and feedback very much! Since our ultimate goal is to "hack" our brain by beating memory curves, Lingvist should prepare the cards you need to practice and revise after weeks or even months of absence. It's evident that we still have room for improvement, thank you very much for the suggestions and we will discuss your idea internally. Please reach out to hello@lingvist.io if you have other comments!
