I’m just giving this five stars only because I’m pretending Bennett is this godlike figure watching over my shoulder trying to deliberately make me fall and by writing this review I’m giving myself my own good luck like complementing him and his game will make the game easier lol
The game is fun, and obviously challenging like it’s supposed to be, but one thing I find really annoying is how the controls aren’t consistent, at one moment you swing the hammer and he fully extends his arms like he’s supposed to, but then a second later, you do the exact same movement with your finger or whatever on your phone, and he barely extends his arms out and he just out of nowhere launches himself off of a wall and sends himself back to the beginning. Another thing is he voluntarily moves his hammer sometimes to. Overall though it’s a good game tho lol
I love this game. I had played it for years on my iPad and struggled through it with no issues other than my own lack of skill. I got this version wanting to revisit for nostalgia purposes, on my phone, which I already knew was going to be an adjustment. Little did I know just how much adjusting I would have to do, because on a normal phone screen, this game is borderline unplayable. There is simply not enough room for my thumbs to effectively control the hammer, as I start out in the middle right of the screen and gradually find myself boxed in to the lower right edge/corner, rendering very important moves like the pogo impossible. This wouldn’t be as big of a deal, I could simply take my thumb off the screen and reposition, if it weren’t for a bug(?) that occurs when I take my thumb off the screen and then press the screen again causing the hammer to glitch and shoot in a random direction, often against a wall or the floor, sending me all the way to the bottom (not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.) I don’t remember ever having this problem, although it may not have been as noticeable on a bigger screen with more thumb real estate. As it stands, Getting Over It on the iPhone is a pretty miserable experience and not for the reasons the game wants to be miserable.
This game is horrible, but one thing is for certain- this game has so much potential, and that is what drove me to write this review. While playing this game, I find that the controls are very unruly. To start, the hammer slightly “drifts” to the left when not touching the controls, and the hammer moves on its own when touching a surface. I come to a reasonable conclusion that this is a way to assist the player in progressing through the game, for there are a lot of hardships when playing on a touchscreen. But, it makes the hard game only harder and more frustrating , and really dilutes the fun of “getting over it.” I really, really hope that in the near future the developers would take some dire action and make some changes to the controls. Some quick and easy suggestions: -Add a wider range of sensitivity, making the player to be able to have a super slow sensitivity to a super high sensitivity -Add the option to have an “assist” mode, meaning give the player an option to have to game move the hammer on its own or not -Related to the first bullet point, add an option of which the location finger/stylus on the touchscreen will directly correlate with the location of the circle that controls the hammer. The only reason of why I deem this game 4 stars is only because it could be better. Please take my opinion into some consideration.
So this game is great. I had a lot of fun, even when going through the most stressful frustrating obstacles. Getting to the end then falling all the way back to the beginning was definitely frustrating but I honestly kinda enjoyed it because it gave me a sense of accomplishment when I finally completed it. There are two major bugs, however, that make the game so much more frustrating than it is. First, a lot of times when I would close the game, when I opened it later my hammer would be glitches into the wall. Usually it would be fixed when I reloaded the game, but sometimes I would have to start a new game completely. The second major bug happens after you complete the game. I have finished it 3 times now, and each time I had to delete the game and redownload it to play again. If I skipped the end credits and then started a new game, it would just bring me back to the start of the end credits and I would have to delete the game to play again. If I watched the end credits all the way through and then started a new game, it would just bring me to a black screen that I can’t get rid of unless I delete the app. Overall, this game is very good, I just that it is not meant to really be on mobile. If these bugs are fixed, I think it would be a much better game to play.
As of writing this I am currently at the bucket. I am having this glitch where I literally cannot do anything because Diogenes (the guy in the cauldron) constantly tries to get on top of the bucket without me touching the screen and then pushes me off. Like pushes the side of the bucket. I can’t explain it better than that and I basically controls the hammer. I straight up can’t do anything. Also right after the cardboard boxes where you are at the stairs with the chair and camera. Right on the bottom where the stairs meet I got my hammer stuck there and the first time it glitched me out and basically restarted me (but I easily got back cuz of the amount of times I fell before that) but the second time I used the glitch to my advantage. I was in the middle of probably being sent back to the beginning and then I shut off the game and went back onto it. It got me to right before the anvil and hat. Thanks for the boost glitch Ig..But the bucket part for me is probably near impossible because of the fact Diogenes wants the bucket instead of the cauldron. Btw I’m realizing this sounds fake but I feel like I’m the only person with this issue. I can’t find anything about it. It’s done it every time I get the hammer onto the bucket. It attempts to do it but then fails but I seen it successfully get onto the bucket only to push himself off.
