The highest rated app for drawing on real world media just keeps getting better! Camera Lucida version 13.0 puts powerful new color palette tools at your fingertips. Now with just the press of a button, Camera Lucida will analyze the image you want to draw and show you the best colors to use to draw the image. You still can control all the details - how many colors you want to use, the fine tuning of the colors, and even setting the colors from a photograph of your own paints, markers or colored pencils. Camera Lucida will then enable you to work on the colors layer by layer, giving you complete control over what color layers are displayed over your drawing surface.
With version 13.0, you can also make use of Apple's newest ultra-wide angle cameras to create very large art without having to place your iPad or iPhone far from your drawing surface! With sophisticated corrections for barrel distortion, you can do this without creating any fisheye or other unwanted effects. To use this feature, you'll need one of the awesome new iPhones or iPad Pros with these lenses.
Also included are many updates that come directly from the suggestions of Camera Lucida users. A new slider, for example, enables you to control the transparency of your overlay while you're composing your image. This is super helpful when you are compositing multiple photographs into a single drawing.
These days there are lots of apps that try to copy Camera Lucida, but even the best of them only have half the functionality of Camera Lucida. Our pledge to you is to continue our 11-year commitment to create the richest drawing app with the best technical support possible. We do it while continuing to support iOS versions all the way back to 9.3, which means our app even runs on an iPad 2!
13.0 24/05/2021
The highest rated app for drawing on real world materials keeps getting better!
There are now plenty of alternative apps, but only the original Camera Lucida keeps ahead of the curve by offering exactly what artists request! Read the reviews, watch the videos and see for yourself why it's the best.
Version 12.0 provides users with a new set of easier to use manual camera correction tools for use with tilted or mirrored drawing setups.
For users making use of the automatic camera correction feature, a new visual inspection tool provides immediate feedback on the quality of the correction.
For sugar artists and other users who use the app with a projector, a new "Projector Mode" that shuts off the camera view has been added as well.
Other minor changes such as being able to print or email the manual, lengthen the flicker time, etc. have been made as well.
12.0 18/01/2021
The highest rated app for drawing on real world materials just got so much better!
By leveraging computer vision, Camera Lucida can now automatically adjust your camera's view to account for tilted and mirrored setups! To use, just place a target image on your drawing surface and press the new "AUTO!" button. The app will automatically align and correct the camera's view with zero added lag or reduction in camera image quality! You can also use this technology to realign a drawing that you had previously started and not finished. Wow!
This new feature is available as an in-app purchase for existing and new users.
Better than augmented reality, which projects your subject onto surfaces and reduces video quality, Camera Lucida's computer vision based alignment ensures you're drawing with a top-down view regardless of camera angle. In addition, improved image effects, a new in-app help system, a full user manual and even more support for wireless keyboards makes this one of the best updates ever.

Version 8.0.1 fixes the app shut-down that occurs if you've denied the app access to the camera. It also fixes a rare camera rotation issue.
Every 8.0.x improvement listed below is the direct result of working with amazing artists around the world and listening to their suggestions for making the app even more powerful and easy to use. The Camera Lucida is in the news lately and we're proud to offer the best of the best! Version 8.0 enhancements include:
A live preview of your drawing surface as you zoom and compose your art. This facilitates everything from creating composite art to placing a cartoon on a cookie that's ready to decorate.
A new and improved information window with direct links to tutorials to help get you started, contact us, leave feedback, etc.
An improved image processing menu that shows live previews of the filters and tools.
A brand new tool box that neatly hides new features out of the way.
A flashlight button that turns on your iPhone's flash to light up your drawing surface.
A new "Vermeer Slider" that allows you to slide your transparent layer horizontally to get perfect side-by-side color and shading.
A new "Flicker" feature that fades the reference image in and out at a speed of your choosing. When your art matches the reference image perfectly, the flicker appears to stop!
A new recording button that lets you actually make a time lapse video recording of your art's creation process. Plus, you have the choice via the settings page to hide the user interface or not in the final movie!
New support for bluetooth keyboards so that you can zoom, pan and adjust the alpha transparency without touching your device. This is really useful if you're mirroring your device to a TV or laptop for creating large art. Note that iOS 8.0 is required for this feature.
Support for the front camera, as well as optionally reversing the image.
Ability to reduce the resolution of the camera in order to reduce lag on slower or older devices.

8.0 18/09/2014
The changes incorporated in Camera Lucida 7.0 are inspired by the cookie and cake decorators who have found the app to be an economical replacement for expensive projection systems.
Since decorating often requires drawing on small objects such as cookies, version 7.0 now allows you to shrink your image and place it anywhere on your screen that you like.
Also, Version 7.0 brings support for images with a built-in alpha transparency channel. This feature is particularly helpful when tracing letters, graphics or other digitally created art.
7.0 06/06/2013
In addition to supporting the iPhone 5's taller screen, Version 6.0 includes several changes requested by our users. These changes include:
A fresh new look with a new system icon that better represents the app's focus on drawing.
An improved zooming and panning feature that keeps the 3x double tap, but also allows for pinching for up to 30x zoom.
A bug fix to keep the "focus and lock" button in the upper right hand corner.
A single tap anywhere on the drawing screen now removes all buttons and menus, leaving your screen 100% available for drawing. Another single tap brings it all back.
A move away from slider based posterizing, levelizing and wash controls to one that uses buttons. While not quite as slick looking, they simply work better and are more accurate.
A new wash feature designed to assist in painting with multiple layers of a single semi-opaque media such as watercolors.
Functions to embed corner ticks and grids to assist in repositioning, etc.
6.0 28/02/2013
Camera Lucida version 5.2 adds a dedicated focus button to the draw window. This button allows you to focus the camera on your drawing surface and then lock that focus in place preventing the camera from automatically focusing on your hand as you draw. We found this happened primarily on the new iPad, which, by the way is awesome given its better camera and higher resolution screen!
Since we were adding this tweak, we also took the opportunity to add the number 1 requested image manipulation feature: A mirroring function.

5.2 16/05/2012
Version 5.1 is a small update that tweaks the user interface in response to iOS 5.0 testing.
Version 5.1 contains all of version 5.0 features including an interactive zoom feature that magnifies both your drawing surface as well as the camera view. When combined with panning using a simple finger drag, these new changes are like having a virtual screen nine times as big as your actual device. Take a look at the screen shots for both iPad and iPhone; they show examples of the new zoom feature.
We've also made some small, but important changes to the interface. We're now using 100% of the screen for drawing and image display with the buttons drawn with a slight transparency to let you make the most effective use of every screen pixel.
Version 5.1 also brings improved landscape support when using an iPhone as well as a new help window for communicating with the developer if you need help or advice.
Lastly, we've added complete control over the camera exposure by allowing a two finger tap anywhere on the camera view... a feature particularly helpful when working on black paper or a drawing with a wide range of brightnesses.

Version 5.0 of Camera Lucida is now available and we're sure it's not going to disappoint!

5.0 14/09/2011
Version 4 of Camera Lucida is now available as a universal app, supporting all iOS devices with a rear facing camera, including the new iPad 2.
Also, we took the opportunity to add some more of our favorite image processing tools to give you additional creative control of the drawing process. To take advantage of these new tools, we're now applying the filters on top of one another so you can mix and match to create your own effects. We figured it was a digital camera lucida, so why not load it up with cool digital processing! And, just for good measure, we've duplicated the save feature in the lucida mode as well.
Finally, with the help of our users, we tracked down that annoying crash and fixed it! If you have any issues or ideas, we would love to hear from you.
4 19/04/2011
Camera Lucida version 3 is now available and it's got everything you were asking for!
We listened to your comments and worked with our user base to bring the app to a whole new level. New features include:
A revamped user interface that's easier to use and simply more elegant.
In-app image zooming, panning, and yes, rotation to support landscape drawing and painting.
An image save feature that lets you save your cropped image to your camera roll so you can pause your drawing and come back to it at any time.
Full support for your iPhone 4's camera flash, front facing camera and of course, drawing with that gorgeous retina display.
The lucida overlay mode now allows you to hide the posterizing and leveling controls with a tap of your finger and additionally you can now control the number of posterized levels. Want a pure black or white drawing with just two colors... you've got it!
We've also added several other overlay modes including a slick 64 color mode that really makes it easy to spot your warm and cool colors. And just for good measure, we've also added a Sepia and Greyscale mode.
At a price that's still less than a decent watercolor brush, Camera Lucida might just be the best addition to your artistic toolbox yet!
What's next: We're working on a universal app that will work with the iPad 2. Buy before April 15th and get the original low price and free updates.
