Jedes Nomen hat ein grammatisches Geschlecht, das sogenannte Genus.
Es ist entweder ein Maskulinum (männliches Nomen), ein Femininum (weibliches Nomen) oder ein Neutrum (sächliches Nomen). Man kann das Genus an den bestimmten Artikeln der, die und das erkennen.
Das grammatische Geschlecht stimmt jedoch nicht immer mit dem natürlichen Geschlecht überein. Es heißt beispielsweise das Mädchen. Dabei ist das Nomen Mädchen ein Neutrum (= grammatisches Geschlecht), die gemeinte Person ist aber weiblich (= natürliches Geschlecht).
Die Artikelbestimmung im Deutschen ist leider sehr schwierig. Am besten lernt man ein neues Nomen immer zusammen mit dem jeweiligen Artikel.
