HiFutureSelf - Future Messages
Schedule Reminders Motivation
Free
Soft morning light filtered through the curtains of Emi’s small Brooklyn apartment. At her feet, Momo stretched lazily, eyes half-closed in contentment. Emi checked her phone, smiling at the message: "You’ll find your rhythm today." A comforting whisper from her past self.
She had found HiFutureSelf by chance one rainy evening, exploring apps to soothe her restless mind. The app let her send small reminders, carefully timed for when she needed them most. Emi often forgot small things—like bringing her grocery list to Trader Joe’s, feeding Momo during busy mornings, or simply breathing calmly in the city's rush.
Now Emi set location-based reminders regularly: her grocery list appearing as she entered the market, gentle prompts to slow down as she left home. She loved leaving secret messages that surfaced when she needed reassurance.
HiFutureSelf allowed reminders to repeat, blending into her everyday life. Simple messages encouraged her to drink water throughout the day and prepared her for yoga classes every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Momo seemed happier too, noticing Emi’s newfound calm.
On her home screen, small widgets gently revealed future messages, quiet reassurances waiting patiently.
One afternoon, Emi realized she could send these future messages to her friend Kate, who often felt overwhelmed by city life. She scheduled a secret note for next week: "Everything will align soon. Trust yourself," paired with a candid photo of Kate laughing as she played with Momo on Emi's sunlit apartment floor.
As the city darkened into evening, Emi composed another message to her future self: "You’re doing just fine." She released it softly into the days ahead, trusting it would arrive precisely when needed—a quiet lifeboat on the sea of time.
more Very fun and useful, the only bad thing I could say is that sending messages to current time does not work :(

2.9.3 02/03/2025
I’ve had enough. You know, I haven’t been particularly happy with how my personality has been developing in the last few years. As I’m edging to my 40th birthday, I’m noticing that I’m becoming cranky, pretentious, snobby, and critical. Everything and everyone is in the way, and daily tasks are a chore to get through. I can’t imagine 40 more years of this! It’s time for a change. How would I like to lead my life? I would like to be generous and playful. I want to live life and derive joy and laughter in the daily routines. Would I be friends with me right now? No way.
My default has become melancholy and nihilism. I’m going to shift it to playful and generous (I used to be this person!)
== Story Time! (This was the breaking point) ==
I was waiting in line at the grocery store, and there was a mom ahead of me. The clerk rang everything up and gave her the total. She paused and asked where she could get a large bottle of water. Isle 3. She darts off to isle 3. This store is massive. The line is getting longer. I’m next, and completely incredulous. Everyone is annoyed and waiting. 5 minutes later she comes back empty handed. She clarifies the location of the water, and darts off again. Another 5 minutes go by, and she comes back with the water. She apologizes to me (I nod annoyed), and proceeds to count change for another 5 minutes to finish the checkout process. After she was done, I bought my shampoo and walked out of the store. I was so frustrated that this 1 minute shampoo trip turned into a 20 minute ordeal.
After a few minutes I realized the actual situation. This mom was just like my mom. We moved to this country 25 years ago, and my mom worked at Macys trying to make ends meet. She counted every dollar and every penny to make sure we always had enough. She struggled and thanks to her hard work, my sister and I were able to get on our feet. My behavior in the store suddenly was so shameful. This is not who I am, this is not who I want to be.
"What would I do if I was playful and generous?" Whenever I’m annoyed, that’s my primary question now. Whatever the answer to that question, I need to do that. In this case, the answer was obvious. If I was playful and generous, while the mom was gone, I would secretly add my shampoo to her total, pay for all of it, and leave $5 for the water for when she came back. I would smile walking away from the store knowing that I did something good for someone. It would make me feel so good. I would smile and sing songs all the way home because I behaved in a way that I want to lead my life. And I would have earned my own respect for that act. I would be friends with this guy! I want to be that guy!
I came home and realized I had to change. I was not the best version of myself. With age, I was actually becoming a worse and worse version of myself. The cycle has to be broken. This HiFutureSelf update is a step in that journey. I’ve added a handful of messages throughout the day/month to help remind me to be more playful in life.
If you go into the Message List View, tap on the “Sparkles” section (next to pending & delivered), you will see a new category for “Playful mindset”, feel free to join me and schedule the few messages that resonate with you and hopefully we can get to the other side of this and be the best versions of ourselves.
This section will evolve as I see what is working/not working and I’ll try to keep adding things to it. So we both can get to a good place.
If you have suggestions I’m totally here for it! Email me david@hifutureself.com
2.9.2 24/02/2025
- Fixed an issue that prevented the “Resend” option from working when searching Delivered messages.
- Updated the icon for the "Today" section to have a little haze during sunset
- Updated the large widget to limit the number of lines displayed to 3.
- Subtle change, but when pressing down and holding a repeat option the cell will highlight gray now. This is a custom SwiftUI view, and I'm just matching a default behavior so it feels a little more natural.
2.9.1 16/02/2025
- I visited Apple HQ this week and with help from Apple Engineers, Siri integration now works! After installing this update, launch the app and ask Siri, “Send a message with HiFutureSelf.” You’ll see a prompt to enable Siri. You can then use HiFutureSelf with Siri anytime.
- I promised myself not to touch the storage layer for a year after the SwiftData migration, but I couldn’t resist a few more tweaks!
- Fixed a bug when deleting old delivered messages. Thanks for all your feedback!
2.9.0 11/02/2025
- Remade the "Display Message" view in SwiftUI. Now when your message arrives, you'll have nice iconography for the actions. This was a necessary upgrade for a couple of additional features coming soon!
- Improved "Popup" message sizing when you hold down on a message in the message list view.
- Improved widget styling. Removed the small (unnecessary) icon and made the date larger and compatible with European styling (d/m vs m/d). This has been bothering me forever, so happy to make this change!
2.8.9 25/01/2025
- Resolved small bug relating to syncing your messages
- Fixed the width of icons in the "Resend" delivered messages popup. Updated the resend to "Tomorrow" icon
- Remove Time capsule option. Next Time Capsule will be in December 2025!
2.8.8 14/01/2025
- You can now swipe delivered messages left to right to trigger a modal to resend in 1 hour, in 4 hours, tomorrow, or next week.
- Made the swipe between compose and messages view more forgiving so it's much easier to swipe between those two views
- Fixed issue when toggling between sections (Suggested/Pending/Delivered) while in edit mode. Now the edit mode deactivates before switching sections
**
On January 15th, the Time capsule button will disappear! If you haven't sent your 2025 time capsule, this is your last week to do it!

2.8.7 07/01/2025
