The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) cognitive exam is a computer adaptive test (CAT). The number of questions a candidate can expect on the EMT exam ranges from 70 to 120. Each exam includes 60 to 110 scored items that contribute to the final result, alongside 10 unscored pilot questions used for future test development. Candidates are allotted a maximum of 2 hours to complete the examination.
The NREMT exam comprehensively covers the spectrum of EMS care, including: Scene Size-Up and Safety; Primary Assessment; Secondary Assessment; Patient Treatment and Transport; and Operations. Patient care questions are allocated with 85% focusing on adult and geriatric patients and 15% on pediatric patients. Successful completion requires candidates to meet a standard level of competency, defined as the ability to provide safe and effective entry-level emergency medical care.
