There’s much more to France than the Eiffel Tower, castles and vineyards. With a panoramic coastline and stunning mountainous regions, the Gallic landscape is rich in natural beauty and has hundreds of trekking routes to explore.
It would be difficult to name them all, but here are five of the most popular. Each one has been listed in Wikiloc, the outdoors-loving app that helps you find the best treks in the world.
Cote du Granit Rose (Brittany)

Beginning in the Breton village of Saint Guirec, on this short tour you’ll enjoy the impressive sight of the area’s characteristic pink granite rocks, which have been shaped by the adjacent Brittany sea. Also of note are the half-timbered and stone houses that are typical of this region and which dot the landscape.
Plan de L’Aiguille (Alps)

Moving to the French Alps, this wonderfully scenic route begins at the Aiguille peak, where you’ll experience unrivalled views of one of Europe’s highest mountains, Mont Blanc. There are plenty more delights on this 7 km route – don’t miss the ice cave along the Grand Balcon Nord path.
Route des Calanques (Cassis)

An unmissable opportunity to swim in turquoise waters surrounded by dramatic cliffs awaits along this 10 km route on the coastline of Marseille. The area features some of the most impressive coves in Europe, and when you’ve completed your trek, a visit to the picturesque town of Cassis is a must.

Cirque de Gavarnie (Pyrenees)

This beautiful and accessible route is located in the Pyrenees, close to the border with Spain. There’s roughly 5 km between the village of Gavarnie and the majestic Gavarnie Falls, which deserves a visit at least once in a lifetime. The area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Chalet du glacier de Bossons (Alps)

Immerse yourself in an ocean of trees along this 12 km trekking route. Once you arrive, take a break on the terrace and enjoy the phenomenal views of the Bossons glacier (one of the longest glaciers in Europe).
