If you’ve wondered “How on Earth did they do that” in admiration at the quality of videos on social media, then it’s time to get in on the secret: Splice.
Download this powerhouse video-editing app, and try these five tips to ensure your next post has your followers asking the very same question you once did.
Add and edit music
How about adding the hit of the moment to your clips for something really extra? As you edit your video, position the yellow marker at the point where you want a song to play, then tap Music at the bottom of your screen. Select a track from hundreds of songs available in the app (or download your own) and tap Add. You can then tweak the volume, speed and length to ensure it matches the vibe you want.

Fade in and out
Little details are key to racking up those likes, such as avoiding an abrupt beginning or ending to your video by adding a fade. To do this, add a Title at the beginning or end of your video, then press and hold to remove the text: you’re left with a blank clip. Tap the icon right next to that clip and select Cross Fade from the menu at the bottom of your screen. You’ll now have a smooth transition between the clips.
Slow down or speed up
Blowing out candles on a birthday cake or a midair kick of the ball – important moments deserve extra emphasis. To do this you can either slow things down or speed them up in your video: tap on your clip, then choose Speed from the bottom menu and adjust the cursor that appears above it.

Experiment with masks
Get creative with visual effects by trying out masks, which let you merge two clips in the same frame. When you’ve selected your clip, tap Overlay to add a second one, then drag it on top of the main clip. Tap Mask on the bottom menu bar and choose from one of the four shapes. Like magic, you’ll now see the two clips in the same frame!
Get colourful
If you have a clip with someone looking directly at the camera, try using the Chroma Key feature – it allows you to replace the background with another colour. Tap and hold your clip, then tap Chroma Key from the bottom menu bar. You’ll now see a brush tool on the bottom-left of the screen. Choose the portion of the video you want to keep the same, then tap Background and choose the colour you like best.
These are just some of the many cool features awaiting you in Splice. Try the app now and polish your videos to a pro standard that will really shine online.
