more This is probably most minimalistic RSS reader app I’ve ever seen and I love it. It’s almost perfect, I would love to combine Feedly with another reading article app and see it in one big list, then switching it between two different accounts and it is shame that you can’t make your own color palette. Almost perfect.

4.8.1 13 Mar
Unread 4.8 adds these improvements and more:
• Syncing with Inkwell, a new feed service
• Reliability improvements around webpage text
• Faster opening of link articles
Syncing With Inkwell:
Inkwell is a new web-based RSS reader and syncing service. This update adds the ability to sync with Inkwell. Add an Inkwell account just like you would any other feed service account.
I updated the privacy policy, adding a link to the Inkwell privacy policy.
Reliability Improvements Around Webpage Text:
Webpage text for an article can either be generated via Unread’s webpage text cloud service or on device. The webpage text cloud service is faster, requires less battery power, and uses less data. The cloud service also makes it possible for me to deploy an update to the webpage parsing logic without releasing an update to the app through the App Store.
I added an on-device webpage text generator to Unread when I added the website accounts feature for paywalled articles. When retrieving webpage text via a website account, Unread does not use the cloud service. This ensures that Unread’s servers never see credentials or authorization tokens pertaining to a website account.
When the webpage text cloud service is unable to generate webpage text for an article, Unread now falls back to using its on-device webpage text generator.
One trend I have seen is an increasing number of websites refusing requests from clients in data centers and cloud platforms. I believe the rise of artificial intelligence has motivated websites to block anything that looks like an automated agent from retrieving webpages. A request coming from a data center or from a cloud platform looks like such a request, but a request coming from your device does not. This change makes webpage text much more reliable.
The webpage text cloud service keeps track of websites for which it is unable to generate webpage text. Unread keeps a synced copy of that list of websites. When Unread needs webpage text for an article from such a website, it does not ask the webpage text cloud service. Instead it goes straight to the on-device webpage text generator. This ensures that loading webpage text is not slowed down by a request to the webpage text cloud service when that will likely fail.
Faster Opening of Link Articles:
When showing both feed and webpage text for an article and that article’s webpage text has not yet been retrieved, Unread now shows the feed text immediately when it is opened. It then retrieves the webpage text and appends it to the article. This makes it possible to start reading the feed text immediately. It makes the app feel much faster.
Additional Improvements:
• Menu items for renaming folders and tags are now consistently called “Rename Folder” and “Rename Tag” respectively, except when working in a NewsBlur account. In a NewsBlur account, the menu item is still called “Edit Folder” because the resulting screen also allows you to set the parent folder of the NewsBlur folder.
• Unread now treats most kottke.org articles as link articles. If you set the link article display mode to Feed & Webpage Text for the kottke.org feed, you will see both the kottke.org article and the article to which it links. This change will apply to new articles downloaded after installing this update.
• This update adds minor improvements around sharing articles to other apps via the share sheet.
• This update adds a variety of improvements to the in-app webpage text generator.

4.6.2 01/10/2025

• This update adds some webpage text improvements for some websites when using website accounts.
4.6.1 24/09/2025
Unread 4.6 adds these improvements:
• In most themes, the status bar and the bottom bar now have the same color as the background color of the article list or the article screen. On both iPhone and iPad, the title or syncing status is now horizontally centered and shown above the home indicator. On iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, the title or syncing status is now vertically centered in the bottom bar. This looks better because the home indicator is usually hidden on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.
• When searching for an article or for a feed subscription, the search field now appears at the bottom of the screen or just above the software keyboard.
• On an iPad running iPadOS 26, this update adds a menu bar providing easy access to most actions. Unread’s integration with the menu bar also makes it easier to look up keyboard shortcuts.
Keyboard Shortcut Changes:
Since keyboard shortcuts now work with the system menu bar, adopting support for the iPad menu bar warranted revisiting some keyboard shortcuts. This update contains these keyboard shortcut changes on iPhone and iPad:
• Command-M (⌘M) no longer toggles the read/unread status of the current article. This is now reserved by iPadOS to minimize the window. Shift-Command-U (⇧⌘U) or an unmodified M key will toggle the read/unread status of the current article.
• Command-N (⌘N) creates a new feed subscription. Option-Command-N (⌥⌘N) creates a new window.
• Command-I (⌘I) is no longer an alternative keyboard shortcut for the Messages article action on iPhone and iPad. Since article action keyboard shortcuts can be customized, you can still set it as your Messages keyboard shortcut.
• There are some changes around keyboard shortcuts that copy links for pasting elsewhere. Command-C (⌘C) will always copy the URL of the currently selected article in an article list or the URL of the currently selected feed in a feed subscription list. Shift-Command-C (⇧⌘C) will always copy the URL of the currently open article or the currently selected article in an article list.
When performing an operation that requires a prompt or confirmation before continuing, that prompt will now be presented as an alert instead of as a menu. Invoking such an operation via a swipe left menu or a context menu will still result in a menu-based prompt.
Additional Improvements:
• Mark All Read Below operations are now much faster under some circumstances.
• This update incorporates changes that make articles from semianalysis.com look better. These changes will apply to new articles downloaded after installing this update.
• This update adds some bug fixes around syncing accounts.

4.5.1 26/07/2025
Unread 4.5 adds Website Accounts, a new capability that lets you view webpage text for articles that require signing in.
Signing In:
You can sign in to a website when viewing webpage text for such an article by swiping the screen to the left and choosing Sign In from the resulting menu. The ^⌥L (Control-Option-L) keyboard shortcut is also available on iPads with hardware keyboards. Once you have set up a website account in Unread, Unread will generate webpage text for articles from that website using your account. You can manage your set of website accounts from the Settings screen.
Caching:
From the Settings screen you can enable an Eligible for Caching setting for each website account. This is off by default because some websites that require signing in will block you for aggressively retrieving webpages.
Privacy:
Generating webpage text using a website account is done entirely on your device. Unread’s servers are not involved. Unread’s servers do not see any information pertaining to your website accounts.
I updated the Unread Privacy Policy to reflect the addition of this capability with additional details.
Additional Improvements:
• This update adds the ability to reload webpage text for an article by swiping the article screen to the left and choosing Reload Webpage Text from the resulting menu. The ^R (Control-R) keyboard shortcut is also available on iPads with hardware keyboards.
• On the Advanced screen under Settings, there is now an In-App Safari button. Tap that button to open an in-app Safari view with any URL that you enter. This can be useful when you want to sign in to a website with in-app Safari using a magic link.
• This update adds a URL scheme making it easy to create a URL that opens Unread and offers to subscribe to a specific feed, or to find feeds associated with a website. Create the URL by appending the percent-encoded website URL or feed URL to: unread://feeds?url=
• This update removes both the Omnivore article action and the Pocket article action. Both services have shut down. The Unread privacy policy no longer links to the Omnivore privacy policy or the Pocket privacy policy.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented star characters from appearing in article list summaries.
• Unread now draws light borders around YouTube channel icons when searching for a YouTube channel feed.
4.5 15/07/2025
This update adds the ability to import articles from a Pocket export file into an Unread Cloud account.
To import articles from a Pocket export file, open the Settings screen, tap the Unread Cloud account under the Account Settings section, and then tap Import From Pocket.
Articles imported from Pocket will have a title, link, and date based on the Pocket export file. Article content will be generated using Unread’s webpage text engine. The imported articles will be marked saved and unread.
The process of uploading information from the Pocket export file to Unread Cloud should take well under a minute. It may take up to an hour for all of the articles to be added to your account. That work will take place on Unread Cloud servers. Unread will later download those articles when it refreshes your account.
Unread will ignore any article that duplicates another article imported from Pocket or created via Save to Unread.
Additional Improvements:
The Settings screen now lists all accounts. Settings, feed errors, and article action errors for an account are available by tapping that account.
