APPLE ARCADE

Calling all Star Trek captains!

Tense tactical battles

Star Trek’s next frontier? Apple Arcade.

In the turn-based RPG Star Trek: Legends, you’ll build a crack squad of heroes to explore the Nexus: a mysterious dimension of endless possibilities revealed in the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations.

Although you start with a disparate bunch, you’ll soon unlock famous characters from Star Trek lore. Jean-Luc Picard. The Borg Queen. Captain Kirk? Of course! Legends’ roster of collectible crew members touches every corner of the Trek universe.

Legends is very character-focused,” says Amir Lotan, creative director at publisher Tilting Point. “Most other Star Trek mobile games focus on the starships, but in Legends, you have fully articulated characters.” Don’t be surprised when they trade quips during battle.

It’s a virtual who’s who of Star Trek greats.

Across classes including Command, Medical, Science, Engineering and Security, your team will take on ferocious Borg, pesky Romulans and other enemies who stand between you and the secrets of the Nexus. Deploy a tanky brawler such as the lovably grumpy Klingon Worf to soak up damage, or leverage the unique skills of Leonard “Bones” McCoy to heal your team. After all, he’s a doctor!

Bringing these characters to life – particularly those who aren’t known for their fighting prowess – took some ingenuity.

In a tight spot? Captain Kirk’s orbital strike is blindingly powerful.

“Picard is not necessarily a fighter, right?” says Lotan. “He’s a captain – smart, strategic and tactical. It was interesting figuring out his abilities and animations. How does Patrick Stewart fire his phaser?”

Like any good captain, you’ll have to make tough decisions. Which path should you take through each episodic story mission? Should you send a particularly useful crew member out on a background quest for cool rewards, or save them for your next tactical fight?

Even the menu screens are cool. Make it so!

But in true Trek fashion, Legends is more than just a fight-fest. An original script reveals crucial information fans have been clamouring for.

“The Nexus appeared in Generations, but we didn’t find out a lot about it – who made it and what its purpose was,” says Lotan. “Those Nexus rifts that appear in the main universe and pull you in: why do they exist, why do they operate the way they do? We answer all those questions.”
