When a game is full of bugs it’s usually a bad thing – but certainly not in this case. Gorgeously presented, with a catchy orchestral soundtrack and hundreds of levels to tackle, Best Fiends is simply one of the most polished puzzlers you’ll ever play.
The bugs in this case are the titular Fiends: a collection of critters living in the idyllic land of Minutia that has been invaded by slugs. Only Temper (who, despite his name, is a cheerful sort) has evaded their slimy clutches, and so it’s his job to rescue his bug buddies.

To defeat the slugs, you’ll need to match blocks to deal damage. Rather than swapping tiles, you’ll draw a connecting line between them: the longer the chain, the more you’ll hurt them. The game generously counts diagonals as adjacent tiles, making for a more flexible set of puzzles.
Soon you’ll have built up quite the collection of cutesy-crawlies (there’s nothing creepy about them, really), which is vital because the slugs just keep getting tougher and tougher.

Each bug has a special power-up, which you can use when you’ve removed enough blocks of their colour. Temper’s special can clear horizontal lines – create a chain reaction with Howie the lizard’s vertical variety and you can remove all sorts of blockages.

Kwincy the spider, meanwhile, produces a converter block that can transform all tiles around it into yellow flowers, allowing you to link even more tiles together.
It’s delightfully varied: sometimes, as well as defeating slugs, you’ll need to collect apples and candy canes, clear away slimy black goop or melt snowdrifts. All with a canny swipe of your finger.

Crucially, whatever challenge you’re facing, Best Fiends always feels totally fair – and that goes a long way to making it one of the most consistently enjoyable puzzle games on the App Store.
